ORU makes its way in Brazil

After the meeting held with the Uruguayan Congreso de Intendentes (Congress of Governors) last 8th and 9th of June to prepare ORU’s next Executive Bureau meeting that will take place in September in Montevideo, ORU’s Secretariat-General organised a second round of meetings in the Brazilian cities of Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, with the aim of establishing new partnerships with the Brazilian states. The meetings were held on the 10th and 11th of June and gave extremely positive results, such as the beginning of the negotiations for Rio Grande do Sul’s accession to ORU.

The first meeting was held with the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, José Ivo Sartori, who expressed his interest not only in becoming part of ORU but also in participating in the seminar “Cross-border policies of intermediate governments” that will take place on the 25th of September in Montevideo in the framework of the Executive Bureau. The seminar will focus on cross-border experiences worldwide, and besides the participation of the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, the seminar will involve other governors from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia, as well as several presidents of European regions.

For its part, Luiz Fernando Pezão, governor of Rio de Janeiro and member of ORU, also undertook to disseminate ORU’s work among the Brazilian governments and to find states willing to become members.
