10 Latin American regions will benefit from the RIS-AL program

The RIS3 strategies implementation project in Latin America, promoted by ORU Fogar’s 2030 Agenda Work Group, has already selected its ten participants

At the beginning of 2017, ORU Fogar’s 2030 Agenda Work Group, led by the Government of Catalonia, launched a project to take the European Union’s Program "Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialisation" (RIS3) to Latin-American regions. After opening a call for applications, ten regions have been selected to benefit from the RIS3-AL project, six of which are members of ORU.

The regional governments that will take part in the program are the following:

  • Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia
  • State of Pernambuco, Brazil
  • Region of Araucanía, Chili
  • Department de Putumayo, Colombia
  • Province of Azuay, Ecuador
  • Province of Morona-Santiago, Ecuador
  • Province of Pastaza, Ecuador
  • Department of Central, Paraguay
  • State of Colima, Mexico
  • Intendencia de Rivera, Uruguay

The RIS3 strategies are based on a territorial approach methodology that supports the key priorities and needs of each region for a development based on knowledge, capitalizing on the strengths and competitive advantages and supporting technological innovation. The program is implemented successfully in the European Union since 2010, and the initiative by the 2030 Agenda Work Group is among those who have taken the program outside of Europe.

RIS3-AL aims to provide methodological support to the regions, states and provinces for the definition and formulation of their own RIS3 strategy, through a broad participatory process and networking among governments, economic, education, social and other types of agents, related to the research and innovation system. Besides advice for the implementation of the strategy, the selected regions will receive information, technical assistance and resources for travels and the exchange of experiences.

All the project’s details are available on the website www.ris3-al.eu, where you can also download the methodological guide for the development of smart specialization strategies, which is intended to be an aid for the professional teams responsible for the project.
