Examples of SDG's implementation from around the world at the Rabat Assembly

The Forum to be held at the 11th Assembly of ORU Fogar on the 22nd and 23rd of October in Rabat (Morocco) will present implementation examples and experiences of the three global agendas, with regions of the most diverse geographies.

The event, hosted by the president of the organization and also president of the Council of Rabat Salé Kenitra, Abdessamad Sekkal, will discuss how to implement the three global agendas: the 2030 Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Climate Change Agenda and the New Urban Agenda. Thus, besides having governors and regional presidents from Europe, America and Africa, the forum will have a wide presence of representatives of the United Nations agencies and multilateral organizations, such as the World Bank, the OECD, the European Commission, the UN Habitat or the UNESCO, as well as the academic world and an important presence of members of the Moroccan government.

On Monday 22nd of October, after a morning devoted to the most bureaucratic aspects of the organisation, with the holding of a Bureau and an Assembly of members, the World Forum of Regions will be inaugurated by the head of the Moroccan government, Saad-Edinne El Otmani. In the afternoon, a more theoretical session on the regions' role in the three agendas and their challenges will be attended by academic experts, as well as representatives of the OECD and nrg4SD.

On Tuesday 23nd of October, the Forum will acquire a practical approach based on examples and experiences, within the framework of an exchange and debate around the three agendas. UNDP Art, represented by its general coordinator, Johannes Krassnitzer, is going to present the table dedicated to Agenda 2030 and the SDG's, which will include the examples of the Basque Country, North Rhine-Westphalia, Catalonia, Tangier Tetouan Al Hoceima and the Canary Islands. It will show how the SDG's are localised on a regional scale and what role decentralised cooperation can play in the implementation of this Agenda 2030.

Next, the table devoted to the Paris Agreement and the territorial dimension of the fight against Climate Change will be attended by the governors of Reunion (France), Kafrine and Gossas (Senegal), Turkana (Kenya), Tucumán (Argentina) and Cusco (Peru). The debate will pay special attention to the challenge of ensuring that mitigation and adaptation projects have access to adequate financing.

The space dedicated to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda will start with the example of Catalonia and, after reviewing other examples, it will conclude with the speech by Remy Sietchping, Head of Territorial Development at UN Habitat.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Forum will host a session on RIS3, one on Cultural Diversity and one on Good Practices. Over a year later, four Latin American regions will present their RIS3 strategic planning experience during the first session. The governors of Azuay and Pastaza (Ecuador), Rivera (Uruguay) and Colima (Mexico) will report on the results of this experience, which has been funded by the European Commission, represented in the session by Javier Gómez, from the Centre for Intelligent Planning and Research. The session devoted to Cultural Diversity, organized by the Diputació de Barcelona, with the presence of the president of the Group of Experts on Cultural Diversity of the UNESCO, Ferdinand Richard, will count on the contributions of governors from Ivory Coast, Kenya, Paraguay and Ecuador. The session devoted to Good Practices will provide the opportunity for the winners of the I and II Good Practices Awards, to present the projects that won these calls in 2016 and 2017.

Before the closing ceremony, the winners of the 3rd Good Practices Award, organised as in previous years by ORU Fogar and the UNDP, will be awarded. The closing speeches should be made by President Sekkal, the President of the Association of Regions of Morocco, Mohand Laenser and the Governor of Cordoba, Argentina, Juan Schiaretti, organizer of the 5th Local Development Forum 2019.
