The V Summit of Regions 'ZERO HUNGER' to be held in October in Barcelona

The V Summit of Regions 'Zero Hunger' will be held from Wednesday, October 2 to Friday, October 4, 2024 in Barcelona, jointly organised by ORU Fogar and the regional Ministry of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia.

ORU Fogar has always had a strong commitment to food security. Already in the year of its creation, 2008, ORU Fogar signed an agreement with the FAO and has since then a Working Group, first called Food Security and now Food Sovereignty. Over the years, four regional summits have been organised on the subject. The first was held in Dakar (Senegal) in 2010. The second was organised with the Department of Antioquia in Medellín (Colombia) in 2012. More than 1400 participants and nearly 30 countries were represented. In April 2018, the Prefecture of Azuay (Ecuador), organised the 3rd Zero Hunger Summit, which was attended by nearly 3000 participants. In October 2022, in Temuco, Araucanía, the 4th Summit was held. In the post-pandemic period, there was much less mobilisation, but this summit was highly charged with content, which has inspired the actions of the regions since then.

In Barcelona, ORU Fogar's portfolio will undoubtedly be updated. In many parts of the world, the problem of hunger, malnutrition or anaemia continues to exist, and this cannot be forgotten in a call like this one. There are, however, new issues that have emerged with great force, such as the policies deployed in many regions to avoid food wastage. All of this will be included in the Summit.

The Generalitat de Catalunya and the Food Sovereignty Working Group, chaired by the Peruvian Mancomunidad de los Andes, are already working to have the best programme and the best content.
